Trade Wind Inversion — We are currently constructing a 40 year trade wind inversion climatology for the tropical North Atlantic and Caribbean using ERA5 reanalysis data. Due to the increase in vertical resolution between ERA-Interim and ERA5 reanalysis products from ECMWF, it is now possible to resolve shallow inversion features. This has enabled the detection of the trade wind inversion in regions where regular soundings are not available. The strength and frequency of trade wind inversions are being investigated. We expect the study to be published in Fall 2020.
